Louisiana Bar Foundation Grantees 2009

At its November 7 meeting the LBF Board of Directors awarded more than $3.4 million in grants for 2009. These grants were awarded in the traditional areas of legal assistance to the poor, law-related education, loan repayment assistance, building capital development and community partnership panels. The LBF also awarded grants in two new areas: children's legal services and supplemental pay for public interest attorneys and staff.

Building Capital Development   $200,000.00
Building Capital Development grants assist our grantees with the purchase of an office building or renovation to existing space. Grants are capped at $25,000 a year for five years.

Children's Legal Services   $193,535.00
The Children's Legal Services grants help provide legal assistance to needy children in areas of law which affect their safety, well-being, and future development. Annual grants are available to organizations providing direct legal representation of children, in matters ranging from delinquency to access to special education, mental health, and foster care services; organizations engaging in impact litigation and/or systemic legal reform efforts on behalf of children; organizations that provide lay advocacy for children in legal proceedings, such as CASA; and organizations that assist with the administration of justice with respect to children, such as Teen Courts or other court-ordered programs.

Legal Assistance to the Poor   $2,258,034.00
Legal Assistance to the Poor grants support entities that provide free direct legal services to indigent clients, such as; domestic violence programs which enable people to leave abusive relationships and seek safety for themselves and their children; legal services corporations which provide civil legal services to the indigent in each parish of the state; other legal services which provide specialized legal services, such as immigration or health-related services; and pro bono projects, which utilize the local private bar to handle cases for the poor pro bono.

Loan Repayment Assistance Program   $68,525.00
The Loan Repayment Assistance Program provides one-year loans, up to $5,000 to public interest attorneys with law school debt employed by LBF grantees. Participants are eligible for five years of funding. The loan is forgiven after completion of 12 months of employment with the grantee. Twenty grants were awarded for 2009.


Public Interest Attorney and Staff Supplemental Pay   $551,000.00
The Public Interest Attorney and Staff Supplemental Pay grants supplement the pay of full-time, non-contract staff members working at organizations receiving 2008 funding in the Legal Assistance to the Poor funding category.
